PITTSBURGH-(Business Wire)-September 15, 2009 - H.J. Heinz Company, one of the world’s leading marketers and producers of healthy, convenient and affordable foods, today announced the extension and expansion of its contract with CHEP, the world’s leading pallet and container pooling company. The company now ships the majority of products from more than 50 plants and distribution centers to supermarkets, wholesalers, foodservice distributors and wholesale clubs across the United States and Canada on CHEP pallets. The new contract will result in the growth of the CHEP program at both Heinz facilities and contract packagers.

Heinz was an early user of the CHEP program in Australia and Europe, and has been a CHEP USA customer for more than 15 years. The company cites improved service to their customers, standardization across business units and enhanced environmental sustainability as leading benefits from the partnership with CHEP.

“CHEP’s high quality pallet strengthens our supply chain operations and enables us to provide our customers what they want,” said Wayne Skinner, Vice President of Logistics and Distribution at Heinz. “The CHEP program also supports our global sustainability efforts and will help us move closer to a number of our sustainability goals.”

Based on third-party Life-Cycle Inventory Analysis findings, through its use of the CHEP pooling system as opposed to limited-use whitewood pallets, Heinz will reduce solid waste generation by more than 30 million pounds per year, decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 58 percent and save enough energy to power about 2,500 homes with electricity every year.*

“We are honored to be a part of Heinz’s effort to operate a more sustainable company. We also value the trust their team places in our program and are committed to providing the best customer service possible,” said Brian Beattie, Senior Vice President at CHEP.
