TruthPAC: Penn May Never Build a Casino in Ohio - Just Ask Kansas
CLEVELAND-(Business Wire)-September 14, 2009 - Ohio’s anti-casino campaign today revealed Penn National Gaming, the principle backer of the Issue 3 Casino Plan, spent millions, made promises to the people of Kansas and then pulled out of a planned casino there. According to TruthPAC, if voters approve Issue 3 in November, Ohio could be the Penn’s next “jilted partner.”
According to the amendment Penn wrote, the out-of-state casino developers could wait many years - or never build in Ohio at all. Nothing in Issue 3 requires them to build.
After spending more than $25 million, one year ago Penn National Gaming pulled out of a proposed southeast Kansas casino very late in the process, leaving officials disappointed and sending the state back to the drawing board.
“No gaming company builds with cash-on-hand, especially in today’s economy,” TruthPAC spokesperson Sandy Theis said. “Penn’s broken promises to Kansas prove, without a favorable credit climate to finance Issue 3 casinos, the company could delay Ohio construction inevitably or just walk away.”
According to a press report following Penn’s surprise September 12, 2008 announcement, one local legislator called the decision “a horrible injustice to the state of Kansas." The affect of the Penn pullout was profound; community leaders criticized the company because "so many hopes and dreams of a better way of life have been delayed." (SEE: http://bit.ly/QUyEH)
“If Issue 3 passes, Ohio could be Penn’s next jilted partner,” Theis said. “This is just another loophole in Issue 3 that guarantees the casino developers make far more than they are saying – and Ohio gets far less.”
ABOUT TRUTHPAC
TruthPAC is a broad, bipartisan coalition opposed to Issue 3 – a proposed constitutional amendment to authorize four Las Vegas-style casinos in Ohio. Financed, in part, by Ohio's historic horse racing industry that will be destroyed by the Casino Plan, the committee works to counter exaggerated claims put forth by the out-of-state gambling interests bankrolling Issue 3.
