SALT LAKE CITY-(Business Wire)-September 14, 2009 - Senator Bob Bennett recently discussed the state of the nation’s healthcare with a group of Utah CEOs at a CEO Roundtable sponsored by The Utah Technology Council (UTC), Utah’s premier technology and life science association.

Senator Bennett is co-sponsor of the “Healthy Americans Act.” The Healthy Americans Act would put Americans in charge of their own healthcare dollars so insurance companies would compete for business, resulting in lower costs and improved quality of care. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the senator’s bill will be revenue-neutral with long-term savings and will not add to the national debt. The independent Lewin Group estimated that the Healthy Americans Act would cut health costs by $1.2 trillion over the next decade.

“Our current healthcare system is bankrupting our country and we cannot afford to pass a bill that would further add to the unsustainable debt,” said Bennett. “My bill would control the costs of healthcare, reward people for healthy behavior and provide Americans with the power to choose the coverage that is right for them.”

Senator Bennett says that Utah citizens are in a very fortunate situation and ahead of the rest of the nation in many areas, including quality healthcare: “Along with Seattle, Washington, and Rochester, Minnesota, Salt Lake City has the best healthcare in the country,” he said. “In these three cities the healthcare is one-third the price of the rest of the county. Utah continues to be at the forefront of medical work and research. We continue to have the most sought-after medical leaders here, our future is very bright.”

“Senator Bennett is a trusted leader throughout the state of Utah and our country,” said Richard Nelson, UTC President and CEO. “It was an honor for us to host this roundtable with him. His insights on healthcare in the United States were informative, and I’m confident every person here left the event with a new perspective regarding our country’s healthcare situation.”

Senator Bennett is serving his third term as a United States Senator. He is a member of the Republican leadership team. In the 111th Congress, Senator Bennett is focused on getting the economy back on track and cutting down the nation's debt by reforming social security and healthcare.

Senator Bennett is a graduate of the University of Utah, where he served as the student body president. He and his wife, Joyce, are the proud parents of six children and have 20 grandchildren.
