AUBURN, Calif.-(Business Wire)-September 10, 2009 - This weekend some of America’s best road riders will tackle the toughest time trial in America at the 6th Annual Wildest Ride in the West. The Iowa Hill Time Trial is just short of two miles in length and features 20% grades. Just one aspect of the ride, also known as the Auburn Century, the route is 140 miles long and requires riders to climb almost 17,000 feet before completing the tour. There is good news for those who are up for the challenge: registration is still open at www.wildestride.com.

More than 350 riders are signed up to challenge the course and themselves, in a ride that is just as famous for its breathtaking scenery as it is for its breathtaking climbs. The ride snakes through the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada range and includes open roads with very few cars and distractions for a unique experience of total solitude.

“We are able to offer an incredible challenge to some of the best riders in the country, without the hassle of traffic filled roads,” said Glenn Carnahan, organizer of the event and a local rider. Carnahan anticipates a strong showing this year. “Last year Michael Margraf won the time trial with a time of 00:14:22, and based on reports from pre-registered riders the field is expecting to beat that by a second or two this year.”

For riders who are looking for a slightly shorter challenge, the Wildest Ride in the West also includes the Outlaw which is 110 miles with over 11,000 feet of climbing, the Pony Express which is 70 miles with over 6,000 feet of climbing, and the Stagecoach which is 40 miles with over 3,000 feet of climbing.

Riders who agree to the challenge are welcomed with some of the friendliest volunteers in the cycling world, and gourmet food throughout the grueling ride. Proceeds from the event support local community sports programs, youth groups and coaching clinics
