WOMEN & SPIRIT: Catholic Sisters in America To Begin Second Stop on Worldwide Tour at The Women’s Museum: An Institute for the Future in Dallas, Texas
DALLAS-(Business Wire)-September 10, 2009 - Women & Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America, an exhibit chronicling the untold stories of the innovative women who played a significant pioneering role in shaping the nation’s social and cultural landscape will open at The Women’s Museum: An Institute for the Future, September 25 – December 13, 2009, en route to The Smithsonian and Ellis Island. Women & Spirit is a project of The Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) in association with Cincinnati Museum Center, which plans to tour the exhibition nationally. www.womenandspirit.org
First arriving on America’s shores almost 300 years ago, Catholic sisters built and led schools, hospitals, orphanages, colleges, and other social institutions that have continually served millions. Remarkably, they created these enduring institutions at a time when women had few, if any, professional opportunities.
This milestone compilation of artifacts and multi-media presentations reveals a new perspective of American history, including inspiring stories of the sisters’ involvement in the early development of incubators, the Mayo Clinic and Alcoholics Anonymous.
In recent years, LCWR has worked with communities of sisters to research and catalog rare, heretofore unseen artifacts, vivid first-person accounts, photographs, and video from many historical turning points from the Civil War, the Depression, and the Civil Rights Movement, through Hurricane Katrina.
“Few people are aware of the brave women who came here to help pioneers, immigrants and children assimilate into the American fabric,” said Sister Jane Burke, SSND Executive Director of LCWR.
“Through this extraordinary exhibit, we learn the real role of Catholic sisters in the settling and shaping of America. Their huge contributions, never included in our history books, are brought to life in this compelling exhibit,” said Wanda Brice, CEO, The Women’s Museum.
