The James Irvine Foundation Appoints Joseph M. Pon as Vice President for Programs

SAN FRANCISCO-(Business Wire)-September 9, 2009 - The James Irvine Foundation today announced the appointment of Joseph M. Pon as vice president for programs. Pon will join Irvine from Applied Materials Inc. (Nasdaq: AMAT), a Fortune 500 technology company in Silicon Valley, where he is vice president for global corporate affairs. Pon will provide leadership for Irvine’s program department, overseeing the development, implementation and refinement of Irvine’s grantmaking throughout California.

Pon is well-known in government and philanthropic circles in California. An 18-year veteran of Applied Materials, Pon currently has executive responsibility for building and enhancing Applied’s reputation. He also has responsibility for Applied’s worldwide philanthropy and the Applied Materials Foundation, a highly respected corporate foundation in Silicon Valley. With $8 billion in revenues and 13,000 employees worldwide, Applied Materials has long been recognized as one of the country’s most admired companies (Fortune) and best corporate citizens (Corporate Responsibility Officer Magazine).

Pon brings extensive community leadership experience, serving on the boards of the San Jose-Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce, the West Valley-Mission College Advancement Foundation and Opera San Jose, where he also served as president. He has also served in leadership positions on the boards of a number of civic and public policy organizations at the local and national level. A graduate of Claremont McKenna College, Pon has a master’s degree in international relations from the London School of Economics.

Pon will begin his responsibilities at Irvine on October 1 and will be based in the Foundation’s San Francisco headquarters.
