National Drug Czar to Headline Annual Red Ribbon Week Kick-off Breakfast

MIAMI-(Business Wire)-September 9, 2009 - National Family Partnership affiliated with Informed Families/The Florida Family Partnership, together with South Miami Hospital’s Addiction Treatment Program will present R. Gil Kerlikowske, Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), as the keynote speaker for the annual Red Ribbon Week Kick-Off breakfast at South Miami Hospital–Victor E. Clarke Education Center on Monday, September 21 at 7:30 a.m.

Mr. Kerlikowske, will highlight this special occasion by speaking at the annual Red Ribbon Kickoff Breakfast in Miami. Red Ribbon Week has been held each year nationally, October 23–31 since 1985, in response to the death of Kiki Camarena, a DEA agent abducted and murdered by drug traffickers in Mexico City. Red Ribbon Week has made a difference in the lives of millions of children and families in Miami-Dade County and throughout the nation by focusing awareness on the cost of drug abuse, including illegal drugs, alcohol and prescription drugs, and the importance of prevention.

Kerlikowske was nominated by President Obama and confirmed by the U.S. In his position, Kerlikowske coordinates all aspects of Federal drug control programs and implementation of the President’s National Drug Control Strategy. Kerlikowske brings 37 years of law enforcement and drug policy to the position.

About South Miami Hospital’s Addiction Treatment Program

Established in 1976, the Addiction Treatment Program at South Miami Hospital is the only hospital-based treatment program in South Florida. The program offers adult and adolescent inpatient, outpatient and residential treatment programs aimed at overcoming addictive disorders related to alcohol and substance abuse. Physicians, therapists and psychologists treat English- and Spanish-speaking patients using an interdisciplinary approach that addresses all aspects of the illness.
