“Downsized Labor Day” to Honor Out-of-Work, Too: September 7 Called a “Bittersweet Holiday” this Year
LOS ANGELES-(Business Wire)-September 1, 2009 - In light of the challenging economy, Americans across the country are asked to express gratitude at their Labor Day gatherings for their jobs, as well as to remember and honor those who are out-of-work.
“Downsized Labor Day, Monday, September 7, asks those who are employed to commit to do one thing during the week for someone who has lost their job: return their call, help them make a networking connection or invite them to lunch,” says Carol Orsborn, Ph.D., who conceived of the revised holiday after being downsized from her duties as a corporate executive. Orsborn, now senior strategist with VibrantNation.com, the leading website devoted exclusively to successful women over 50, is author of the new book The Year I Saved My (downsized) Soul: A Boomer Woman’s Search for Meaning…and a Job. (VN Books).
Orsborn also calls upon family and friends to build a moment of silence into public and family gatherings at 5 p.m.—the hour traditionally associated with the end of the work day—to honor and remember those who have been downsized.
“For millions of Americans who have lost their jobs, the notion of celebrating a day off from work makes Labor Day a bittersweet holiday this year,” says Orsborn.
“Every family has been impacted by the Recession. Even the majority who are still working are tending to the emotional needs of laid-off spouses and supporting their underemployed family members,” says Orsborn.
“The majority amongst us who have jobs have much to be grateful for, indeed. But putting down the hot dogs and beer for a moment will also be a sign of respect and hope for those who are unemployed.”
The Year I Saved My (downsized) Soul: A Boomer Woman’s Search for Meaning…and a Job recounts Orsborn’s tumultuous journey through recessionary times, struggling to make sense of both personal and societal tribulation. The book is available as both a trade paperback at Amazon.com and electronically, including free syndication on DivineCaroline.com.
