Welch Allyn Joins the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ENERGY STAR® Partnership
SKANEATELES FALLS, N.Y.-(Business Wire)-August 26, 2009 - Welch Allyn, a leading global manufacturer of frontline medical products and solutions, recently joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ENERGY STAR® Partnership. As one of the first medical device companies to join, Welch Allyn—through its voluntary partnership with the EPA—is working to continually enhance energy efficiency and sustainability in its products, processes and manufacturing facilities across the globe.
“We believe that our strategic, corporate energy management program will help us enhance our long-term financial health while preserving our natural resources and reducing our overall environmental footprint,” said Julie Shimer, president and CEO at Welch Allyn. “We are very proud to be part of the ENERGY STAR Partnership program. This designation is proof of our commitment to become a more environmentally conscientious company.”
The Welch Allyn Green Series™ Medical Exam Lights, slated for release in the U.S. early next year, is the first new product line the company will ship as an ENERGY STAR partner. The new lights use light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to produce white light with a color temperature of 5,500ºK, providing caregivers with a superior light that provides enhanced visualization of the exam area, true tissue color rendition, and a uniform spot—no dark or hot spots and no heat dissipation. The lights provide a lower cost of ownership due to the elimination of bulb replacement as well as overall lower energy consumption. The touchless auto on/off and intensity control features reduce the risk of infections due to cross-contamination and simplify cleaning.
Among the more than 19,000 ENERGY STAR Partners, Welch Allyn is one of only 14 medical device manufacturers to be in this globally recognized program. Currently there is not a medical device category for the EPA’s ENERGY STAR product certification program. “We have offered to work with the government to create a new category if the program expands in that direction,” said Tracy Bennett, global category manager, Women's Health Medical Products at Welch Allyn. “It would be an honor to become the first medical device manufacturer to offer an ENERGY STAR-certified product.”
In partnership with ENERGY STAR, Welch Allyn will:
- Measure and track the energy performance of its facilities where possible by using tools such as those offered through ENERGY STAR;
- Develop and implement a plan consistent with the ENERGY STAR Guidelines for Energy Management to achieve energy savings;
- Help spread the word about the importance of energy efficiency to its staff and community;
- Support the ENERGY STAR Challenge, a national call to action to help improve the energy efficiency of America’s commercial and industrial buildings by 10 percent or more; and
- Highlight its achievements with recognition offered through ENERGY STAR.
“ENERGY STAR partners such as Welch Allyn are leading the fight against global warming by improving the efficiency of their buildings and facilities,” said Kathleen Hogan, director of EPA’s Climate Protection Partnership division. “We applaud these efforts to help protect our global environment for generations to come.”
Being an ENERGY STAR partner means Welch Allyn can use the ENERGY STAR Partnership Mark to promote the organization’s commitment to and partnership in the ENERGY STAR program.

About ENERGY STAR
ENERGY STAR was introduced by the EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. Today, the ENERGY STAR label can be found on more than 60 different kinds of products, new homes, and commercial and industrial buildings. Products and buildings that have earned the ENERGY STAR designation prevent greenhouse gas emissions by meeting strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the government. Last year alone, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved about $19 billion on their energy bills while reducing greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of 29 million vehicles.
