ROANOKE, Va.-(Business Wire)-August 25, 2009 - Advance Auto Parts, Inc. (NYSE:AAP), a leading automotive aftermarket retailer of parts, batteries, accessories, and maintenance items, and a national partner of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), is proud to announce the launch of its 2009 “sneaker” sales campaign to benefit children with diabetes. This year marks Advance’s 16th consecutive year of support for JDRF in the search to find a cure for type-1 (juvenile) diabetes. In the past 15 years, Advance has raised more than $16.5 million for JDRF. Advance and its Team Members are tireless in their efforts to give back to the communities in which they live and work. The company has already raised $1.5 million this year towards the 2009 Company goal of $3 million for JDRF.
“Giving to charitable organizations like JDRF is part of our history, part of our culture and a reflection of our values. The Company’s “sneaker” sales program, which will be held at more than 3,400 stores in 39 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, begins this Thursday, August 27 and runs through October 3, 2009. Customers can purchase paper “sneakers” for $1 or $5, which are then displayed in the store windows to show support for this worthy cause. “The Advance Auto Parts team is proud to be a national partner of JDRF in its race to cure diabetes,” said Keith Oreson, Senior Vice President of Human Resources, and Chairman of the Company’s JDRF campaign. “Supporting JDRF is an important part of our company culture and selling ‘sneakers’ is an opportunity for our Team Members to give back to the communities they live in. In addition, we appreciate the tremendous participation from both our do-it-yourself and commercial customers. Their contributions have helped Advance donate $16.5 million in the past 15 years to diabetes research.”
“JDRF is delighted with the generosity, initiative, and passion Advance Auto Parts has shown in helping to fight type-1 diabetes and its complications,” said Alan Lewis, Chief Executive Officer of JDRF. “Partnering with dedicated and leading businesses like Advance Auto Parts helps us accelerate the pace of research.”
In addition to the retail store “sneaker” campaign, Advance is raising additional monies from fundraising events at the company’s distribution centers and store support center. Planned events include silent auctions and participation in several local JDRF community walks and golf tournaments.
ABOUT JDRF
JDRF is a leader in setting the agenda for diabetes research worldwide, and is the largest charitable funder and advocate of type 1 research. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes is a disease which strikes children and adults suddenly and requires multiple injections of insulin daily or a continuous infusion of insulin through a pump. Insulin, however, is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation.
Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.3 billion to diabetes research, including more than $156 million in FY2008. In FY2008 the Foundation funded more than 1,000 centers, grants and fellowships in 22 countries.
